Overtown is a historic neighborhood located in Miami, Florida. Originally established as a segregated community for African Americans in the late 1800s, Overtown has a rich cultural history and played a significant role in the development of Miami as a major city.
The neighborhood was founded in 1896 when the Florida East Coast Railway was extended to Miami, and many African American workers settled in the area to work on the railroad and in the nearby service industries. Despite its challenges, Overtown has continued to be a resilient and vibrant community. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in revitalizing the neighborhood and preserving its cultural heritage. Organizations and community leaders have been working to revitalize Overtown’s historic buildings, create affordable housing, and attract new businesses and investments to the area.
The neighborhood’s rich history and cultural significance have also been recognized and celebrated. The Overtown Music and Arts Festival, for example, showcases the neighborhood’s musical heritage and celebrates its contributions to Miami’s cultural landscape. Additionally, efforts to preserve Overtown’s historic sites, such as the Lyric Theater and the Ward Rooming House, have helped to highlight the neighborhood’s importance in Miami’s history.
