Nellis Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation located in the state of Nevada, approximately 7 miles northeast of downtown Las Vegas. Covering an area of over 14,000 acres, Nellis is known for its advanced training and operational testing programs, making it one of the most prominent and important Air Force bases in the country.
The base was originally established in 1941 and was named Las Vegas Army Airfield during World War II. In 1950, the base was renamed Nellis Air Force Base in honor of Lieutenant William Harrell Nellis, a P-47 pilot who died in action during the war. Over the years, Nellis has played a significant role in training and testing various aircraft and weapons systems, as well as providing support for a wide range of military operations.
The primary mission of Nellis Air Force Base is to provide advanced combat training for aircrews, using the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR), which is the largest contiguous air and ground space for peacetime military operations in the world. The base is home to the renowned USAF Warfare Center, which conducts advanced operational testing and training for both air and ground forces using cutting-edge technology and tactics.
In addition to its training and testing programs, Nellis Air Force Base is also known for hosting several prominent annual events, including the Red Flag air-to-air combat exercise, which provides realistic combat training for pilots and aircrews from various branches of the U.S. military as well as allied nations. The base also hosts the Air Force Thunderbirds, the aerial demonstration team that showcases the skill and precision of Air Force pilots at air shows and public events around the world.
Nellis Air Force Base is an integral part of the Air Force’s efforts to maintain air superiority and combat readiness. Its strategic location, state-of-the-art facilities, and diverse training programs make it an essential asset for the U.S. military and its allies. With its rich history and ongoing commitment to excellence, Nellis Air Force Base remains a vital and influential force in the defense of the United States.
