Minot Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation located in Ward County, North Dakota. It is about 15 miles north of the city of Minot. The base is home to the 5th Bomb Wing, which operates the B-52H Stratofortress bomber aircraft, and the 91st Missile Wing, which operates the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile.

Established in 1957, the base has a long and storied history. During the Cold War, it played a crucial role in the United States’ strategic deterrence posture, serving as a key base for strategic bombers and nuclear weapons. Today, it continues to be an important part of the nation’s defense strategy, providing critical capabilities for global strike and nuclear deterrence.

The 5th Bomb Wing is responsible for providing combat-ready B-52H bombers and aircrews to support the Global Strike Command’s mission of deterrence, assurance, and global strike. The wing’s history dates back to World War II and it has been involved in numerous major conflicts and operations around the world.

The 91st Missile Wing is responsible for maintaining and operating 150 Minuteman III ICBMs in underground silos across the north-central United States. These missiles form a critical part of the nation’s nuclear deterrent, providing a secure and reliable second-strike capability in the event of a nuclear conflict.

In addition to its operational mission, Minot AFB is also a hub for training and readiness. The base hosts the Air Force Global Strike Command’s Warfare Center, which provides training, tactics development, and operational testing for airmen across the command. It also maintains a close partnership with the local community, supporting numerous outreach programs and activities.

Minot AFB is situated in a rural area characterized by its cold winters and vast open spaces. The base and its personnel have become an integral part of the local community, contributing to its economy and culture. The base provides numerous amenities and support services for its airmen and their families, ensuring a high quality of life for those stationed there.
