Malmstrom Air Force Base is located in Great Falls, Montana and is home to the 341st Missile Wing, which is responsible for maintaining and operating Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles. The base covers over 3,500 acres and has a long and storied history that dates back to its establishment in 1942.
The base was originally named Great Falls Army Air Base and served as a training facility for B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator bomber crews during World War II. After the war, the base was deactivated for a short period before being reactivated in 1954 as Malmstrom Air Force Base. It was named in honor of Colonel Einar Axel Malmstrom, a distinguished airman who had been killed in an aircraft accident in 1954.
Malmstrom Air Force Base played a crucial role during the Cold War, serving as one of the key locations for the nation’s nuclear arsenal. Today, the 341st Missile Wing is responsible for overseeing a fleet of Minuteman III missiles, providing a critical deterrent against potential adversaries.
In addition to its missile capabilities, Malmstrom Air Force Base is also home to the 120th Airlift Wing, part of the Montana Air National Guard. This unit operates C-130 Hercules aircraft, providing support for a wide range of missions including airlift, air drop, and aeromedical evacuation.
