K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base is a former U.S. Air Force base located in Marquette County, Michigan. The base was named after K.I. Sawyer, a Michigan native and a Medal of Honor recipient who served as a bombardier during World War II. The base was in operation from 1955 to 1995 and was an important strategic location during the Cold War.

The base was originally built to serve as a Strategic Air Command (SAC) base and was home to the 410th Bombardment Wing, equipped with B-52 bombers. During the 1960s and 1970s, the base played a crucial role in the U.S.’s nuclear deterrence strategy, and its strategic location in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan made it an important hub for military operations.

In addition to its strategic importance, K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base was also a key economic driver for the surrounding community. The base employed thousands of military personnel and civilian workers, and it contributed significantly to the local economy. Its closure in 1995 had a significant impact on the area, leading to job losses and economic hardship for many residents.

After the base was closed, the land and facilities were transferred to the local government, and it was eventually redeveloped into Sawyer International Airport, which serves as the main airport for the Marquette area. Additionally, a portion of the property was converted into the Sawyer International Business Park, providing opportunities for economic development and job creation.

Today, the former K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base is home to a mix of businesses and organizations, and the airport continues to provide important transportation services for the region. The history of the base is remembered and honored through various exhibits and memorials, including the K.I. Sawyer Heritage Air Museum, which showcases the base’s military history and the important role it played in the defense of the United States. The base’s legacy continues to be an important part of the community’s identity, and its impact is still felt today.
